A day at the zoo

01 May 2007

What to do on a sunny public holiday - go to the zoo.

The wee zoo in Amiens is situated not too far from the centre of the town and there is good parking nearby.

It isn't a big affair but for just 5 Euros an adult what are you expecting.

Most of the animals are of the tamer variety, monkeys, apes, kangaroos, zebra and a fair few parakeets etc. but the do have elephants which is more than London can boast.

There is a good basin for the penguins with a viewing window to watch them swimming under water.

At 1530 we went along to watch the sea lions do their act - or rather not do it.

The females didn't want to play at all, though the keep did get the youngest to do a few tricks at the end.

As he said, they aren't forced to do anything and there are days they just can't be bothered.

It was thus up to the big male to put on a one man show.

Just behind the sealions was a large enclosure for the red panda and he was wandering about - I have waited years to see one actually move !

All in all then we spent about an hour and a half in the park and could have stayed a little longer to watch the elephants get their scrub down. For something a little different from Cathedrals and canal ways - worth the try.
